I just got to hunt #68 of 80. I ran out of IR, so I shot two in the leg so they would run at me (rather than wait for the yellow triangle to fill) and when it attacked me there was no slow-mo. He malled me and then when I was laying on the ground it showed the heart while the leopard was next to me on all four paws.

You can get heart shots without IR and even during a slow mo attack that shows a different organ. Just aim for where the heart should be.

The map pieces are awarded on the rare hunts that have a 72 hour timer.

Of course as soon as I posted then 2 hunts later the wolverine hunt came up. Killed 11 then quit. Got to 55 before I accidentally shot all 12.

Only upgrade when it is required, most of the time the upgrades are only "recommended". I'm on 33 of 35, and 38 of 40, for the bow and crossbow hunts. Maybe a check mark next to it or the number of times you have hunted it, or the number of animals you have killed.
