What do the medals mean?

If you click on the thing in the upper left hand corner where it says your current level, it comes up to a box that has your name, picture, level, and a personal motto that you can change. Well, to the right of your picture, it shows three different medals that are faded out - a Gold, Silver, and Bronze medal. My question is this, what exactly are those medals and how do you get them?
