Gunning contest question

I was playing the current gunning contest and reached a multiplier of 22, but then I went to the target shooting to complete a quest and my multiplier was lost due to a missed shot. Why was my multiplier active in a completely different part of the game? Does it reach a certain level and then it's able to be used in the target shooting, or was it just a glitch from the game?

    it happened to me too but now by participating in the cts there is no longer the multiplier
