Evolving an item question

Cheers guys, if anyone still visits this forum I´d be grateful for a reply.
I have finally earned enough glu coins to buy me a fresh new widow makers. I tried evolving them just fine when I came to 30% chance of succesful evolve. I saved 40 level 5 elements to have 10 chances of succesful evolve. I tried 10 times with 10 fails. Before that I tried evolving 50% chance item, it failed 4 times.
I am no mathematician, but I think if I really had that 30% chance one of those 10 times it should hit right? Is it normal or just a bug in the game? Should I just evolve with glu coins everytime instead?
