Earning Pranks

How do you earn pranks in the chef duels? I keep getting hit with them but have never been able to use them on my opponent (or at least I don't think I have). Are pranks just generated automatically or are they chosen by my opponent?

    The game uses the pranks on us, we don't use them on each other. We all experience them when dueling.
