Modding Xbox 360 controller for PC gaming

Possibly an unusual request but has anyone here had any experience using xbox 360 or equivalent controllers and manipulating them into different shapes and form factors for modding projects? Or know of any websites or forums that might be useful for this? I'd like to put the buttons, triggers, analogue sticks and everything around two cylindrical handles but have next to no knowledge of how to do this or how to get started (will do requisite electronics reading/research/practice to learn relevant skills). They don't have to be official Xbox controller parts but it'd be nice if whatever I produced was recognised by a lot of my steam games.
