I git tired of HRs bouncing off the blue monster, so I dumped all my LH batters. Other than that, you can improve players by paying XP, and you can buy new players in the special HR store.
As far as getting better at timing, well you can keep playing forever when an event is on, even if you are losing. So plenty of practice availability.
TIP, pitchers change speeds a bit, so watch the ball all the way to your bat.
