Moving pets?

I adopted the cat in downtown LA after I bought the place next to brew palms-but the cat only shows up in my original downtown apartment. Can I move it? It seems weird that it didn't automatically go to my most recently purchased place at the time of adopting it. You'd think you could just bring pets to wherever you're living considering when people move they tend to not leave their pets behind!
