Change relationship contact to networking contact?

Is it possible to change someone from a relationship/ dating contact to a professional/ networking contact? I read somewhere else that it's possible, but not HOW.
Even though I'm in the game as "interested in women", when I meet men they just ask for my number. I can only accept them as a date, or ignore. I want to add them as professional contacts, but if I give them my number I can't gain networking points if I bring them to events.
I've met some high up characters, I want to be able to use them, not date them!
Any help would be really appreciated!
