If you have a kindle or android, it has to be through facebook. If you have apple, I believe there's an app called game center. Not completely sure. There's a forum thread on how to add people. I know android is through facebook only for sure.
Some androids are acting up and only work with people in your Google+ circles. So you have to add them, they have to add you, but once it's done you can earn points for dating your friends, working with your friends and exchanging gifts. So if facebook isn't working for you, then maybe start a post about google+. Google+ is how I finally connected with other people playing on Androids.
