A major issue (and part of why this isn’t like the flu) is the rate of transmission.. even if a small overall percentage of people with the virus need critical care, if they all need ICU beds at once & all the hospitals are full.. there’s going to be a lot of preventable deaths. So is the reporting in certain places using language that incites panic & causing people to hoard grocery items and make necessities hard to find? Yes. Is this the same as the flu? No. Large numbers of people don’t die of the flu because they’re unable to get a full range of medical care. The steps being taken & social isolation can save a lot of lives, if everyone takes it seriously. It buys hospitals time to treat people before the next wave of sick people come.

I think it’s important to keep in mind that we’re all from different places & at different stages in this pandemic. It can be damaging to underplay how this is affecting people, even if no harm was intended in the original post.

Overall, I hope everyone is doing okay right now & everyone (especially those in the most affected areas) is in my thoughts!!

Maybe Koko’s nurse said what she said bc she was trying to calm fears? Either way, nurses/doctors do have a responsibility to be honest while still not inducing panic.

I hope that's the case and maybe the way she phrased it wasn't the best. I'm just feeling pretty raw because I have a friend who's dad was just moved to hospice because of ongoing medical issues and they expect him to pass either later today or tomorrow. Someone at her workplace tested positive so she's in self-quarantine and cannot go see her dad to say goodbye. She can Facetime and talk on the phone, but it's just not the same and she's devastated. We've had multiple confirmed cases in the surrounding area this past week which is amazing because they're turning people away unless it's dire because there are no testing kits available! You basically have to be extremely sick and even then it's a fight for them to let you come in. I read that 14% of infected individuals in China didn't even show symptoms or got sick so the number of infected individuals is probably much higher than we realize. Our 10 confirmed cases could easily be hundreds if not thousands because people are still going out and it's business as usual for many.

oh that dress - <3  that dress is fabulous.  I just came from the doctor for a routine med refill, and she was comforting.  Said the media is driving a lot of the panic.  It is a bad flu, but it’s not as bleak as media fuels the fire. She said the regular flu season each year has a higher mortality rate than this.  She said relax, take care of others, and be smart.
So being  out, I stopped at 2 supermarkets. What one store didn’t have, the other did.  But....that means I’m cooking.  Lol.  But first........drool time.  I love that dress.  ;)

The fact that medical staff says stuff like "it's just a bad flu" is insane to me, she should be out of her job for this. Here in Spain, we had first case in first days of February - now we have 13.000+ infected. First death was on February 13th, then nothing until March 2nd - that's when second person died. Now 16 days later we have 624 deaths, on Saturday it wasn't even 200 people, so it means we have 100+ deaths each day. We are scared and we still have it better than Italy, which has 200-300 deaths every day. Our health cares are way better (and free) than the US system, so I find it almost offensive how nonchalant some Americans are about the virus, when you haven't even reached your peak of infections. It's not just a bad flu. Every time you belittle the problem, you risk your own life and of every person who interacts with you, so please, be careful and stay safe.
In the last 24 hours we've had 475 victims. THIS IS NOT A BAD FLU.

Does anyone else live in SoCal? If so, did the Morongo and Pechanga Casino commercial songs immediately pop up in your head when you saw this?

That kind of mindset - coming from a health care professional, no less - is the reason why this epidemic has spread so quickly and why it will cost so many unnecessary lives. They might be developing a cure for Corona, but there will never be a cure for stupid.

I get what the nurse wanted to say but she did not word it properly. She did not want her patient to panic because she knows that when panic enters the head, it can only get worse. The virus situation is bad. It's not just like an ordinary flu but there are other things that are taking lives as well. Unfortunately there is a lot of world problems that we're not thinking about, and people seem to acknowledge them only when it can directly affect them or their loved ones (for example the young go first to the stores to buy all the food which is then not available for old people who can't just run and bring everything home immediately, everyone is thinking about themselves). I'm very sad that this is happening and some dude in my country just spread the disease to a few doctors and patients because he did not want to say that he had recently travelled to a country where he got infected. 😡 But I am sad because of other people too. Yemen for example has been experiencing the worst famine with over 17 million Yemen's population at risk (total population around 29 million). Over 85,000 children died and there isn't any data of adult deaths. No one ever talks about them 😔 We should try to make people feel better, and when this virus is finally gone, we should remember those who are still fighting a fight of their lives. I hope we will all be united and strong and spreading correct information is a sign of care too. I'm glad people on this forum care enough. 💕

Regular flu absolutely does not have a higher mortality rate than covid-19 and I am extremely concerned about the quality of your doctor's advice

With all due respect, it's really not and your nurse should find another profession if that's what she really thinks.

The seasonal flu is a human virus, meaning humans can build up immunity to it by either exposure or a vaccination. COVID-19 originated from animals so our bodies do not recognize it as a human disease and doesn't know how to fight it, similar to H1N1. It specifically targets the respiratory system which the flu can also do, however the reproduction rate (the rate it spreads from person to person) is 2x the flu and so far, the statistics regarding fatalities in Coronavirus vs the flu are also much higher (the flu accounts for less than 0.1% deaths in the US) and we're just getting started. While the media is probably going overboard and inducing panic (when do they not?!) we still need to take this VERY serious and it is NOT "just a flu".

For those of you in the US, here's a great article that really helped me understand the severity of the situation. In the beginning of the article, there are interactive sliders that you can move to show different outcome scenarios in regards to Covid-19 fatalities.

I'm not trying to cause fear, but it helped me understand what we're facing. It illustrates the difference between Covid-19 and the flu.

I think spreading misinformation/downplaying how dangerous covid-19 is should be completely unacceptable on this forum and posts should be removed.

Absolutely not a fan of this week earnables and TS items.  I won't fight for any of it, even if I would love to win gold dye! I totally forgot we were Wednesday due to the quarantine in France (it began yesterday), so I forgot to check for spoilers!

In the end I decided to come back to my mom's house, feeling it would begin soon and probably last a long time.
I know it was kind of a selfish decision, but I took precautions during my trip back home (short trip). I couldn't see myself being locked down in my small apartment while I knew I could be on the seaside, surrounded by nature and still "free" to be out in the garden weather permitting. I've been unemployed and looking for a job the past six months, so being able to think about something else than my future and coronavirus was essential to my mental health well-being.
Plus, my cat really love when we come back to my mom's house, she has "living toys" in the garden to play with 😁

I'm at a point when the fact that I love the TS prize (even the top 5 prize) fills me with dreadful anticipation of the inevitable ticket buying frenzy, SYS more like make your bid :c

I don't mind either dress but to be honest, I rarely get top 5 or to the end to receive the last earnable!
I will probably be able to earn the handbag, but I will neverrrrr use it. I don't really like the handbags on the shoulder as you can't ever see them fully with the arm blocking it, orrr it covers the dress that you don't want to hide?
Anyway, ramble over, I will still have some fun trying to put some looks together!

I think the earnables are the perfect level of tacky where I don’t hate them 😂 but I liked the original moschino look a lot better. Loooooooove the gown, hair is nice but not worth a fight so let’s just hope I don’t have more than 5 ticket buyers lmao. Still have no idea what to wear tho?? Somebody post inspo 😩

I’m really glad everyone in this thread is reminding everyone to take the virus seriously. I live in the US and at first it seemed like nobody was (including our own president ofc), but now things have finally taken a turn for the most part and more people are understanding the importance of social distancing.
