Just wanted to hop on here real quick and say anyone who uses or is even thinking about using Dia De Los Muertos themed looks are ignorant and tonedeaf. We all know this Mexican Festival is for Cinco De Mayo (Kim even mentions it in the call) and IĀ think its incredibly messed up for you guys to use the Catrina (because thats what its called not a "sugar skull") as a costume for this SYS just because its "Mexican". I dont even want to see that during halloween cause Dia De Los Muertos is not Mexican halloween! there is deep meaning behind it and im disappointed to see it from and others praising it when this forum regularly speaks up about racial injustice when it comes to traditionally black hairstyles or kimonos during Korean street style, but somehow THIS is okay? Very much performative activism from this group of people here on the forum. Either defend all cultures or just dont say anything ever. Ive been waiting for any of you regular forum activists to speak up about this but apparently this isnt an issue to yall since all ive seen is praise over these insensitive looks in this thread. *Sigh* I knew ever since I saw the new diamond kollectionĀ that Glu was going to make this into an SYS and that it was going to cause issues... I did point out this issue of ignorant people meshing the two holidays together in the Update thread, and I have to acknowledge that Glu did absolutely play a role in perpetuating the appropriation that goes on both in-game and on this forum by adding a purse shaped like a Catrina to a kollection that had Mexican-style clothing that was meant to correspond with an SYS theme to āhonorā Cinco de Mayo (I used the term āsugar skullā in my original post because it was the only term I knew of at the time of my post and wasnāt aware that it could be viewed as offensive to some people). However, I did not initially point this out again in this thread because I wanted to give the Mexican dolls on this forum a chance to speak out on this first, because I did not want to speak out of line and be viewed as though I am virtue signaling or trying to speak unnecessarily on behalf ofĀ the Mexican dolls.
As a white doll, I usually speak out on these things when the dolls of the particular race/ethnicity that is being appropriated/mistreated are the ones to initially speak out about their discomfort first, and find themselves constantly explaining to all the white dolls on here who think itās okay to just be chameleons and appropriate into whatever culture fits a particular stereotype. I usually like to wait before speaking out on something that I may view as culturally and racially insensitive because I donāt always know if my views align with those whose culture it actually applies to (usually itās that Iām too careful about it as opposed to not careful enough, and it ends up being that something that I originally thought was appropriation ended up being okay to do in the eyes of the actual POCs involved, such as using certain hairstyles that are curly but not actually POC hairstyles). I donāt always know everything about certain cultures or the historical significance of certain things, but even so I feel it is my duty as a non-POC to listen first to what the POC dolls on this forum have to say and to later serve as an ally and to help other white dolls on this forum understand and be more culturally aware as well.
So I think that while there are still some dolls on this forum who either just donāt care or are ignorant about the appropriation of Mexican culture, I also believe that there are plenty of dolls on this forum (such as myself) who mean well and firmly stand against racial insensitivity and appropriation, but who may be unsure about whether or not they should speak on these issues before the Mexican dolls on this forum even get a chance to share their views on the situation, because ultimately it is their views and opinions that matter most when it comes to whether or not something should be viewed as appropriation or culturally ignorant. And of course, there is also a big chance that a lot of these dolls just simply donāt always know everything about every single culture and just arenāt aware of the discrepancies that set Cinco de Mayo apart from DĆa de los Muertos, but that doesnāt mean that theyāre not willing to learn and be more aware of Mexican culture and be allies to the Mexican dolls who feel that their culture is being misrepresented. I, as a Latina poc, agree with this 100 percent. Iām not Mexican, Iām Colombian, but I agree that peoples culture shouldnāt be used as a costume. And itās sad that people are quiet with these kinds of things when it comes to us Latinos/Hispanics. No ones culture should be used as a costume at all. Glu needs to understand that and some people on this form need to understand that too. And I think more people should talk about this but they donāt and itās upsetting.Ā
