I just started playing and can't figure out how to get the purple key in the locked chest. The tutorial wasn't real clear on this. Any help?

Yeah, and your first move (the one that will "place" the Purple Key) is very important with this. If you can position it right on top of a column where you can do a vertical match on the very next move, you'll be close to the bottom early on.

You want to avoid placing it near a section where there's only one potion (for example) near the bottom. That can be very difficult to manage to make a match in the ten moves that you have.

If your hero is close to defeat, you can also use this time as ten free "preparation" moves to increase your Shield and Health and ignore the key altogether. (Or just loot for Gold!)
