Mystery alerts?

When I'm in the town mode, the little square map at the lower right shows 12 alerts/messages, but when I go to the friend area, there are no alerts there: no supplies are ready, no one needs "help", and there are no new mail messages. These has been building over time. Originally it was just 1 mystery alert, but has been steadily increasing so that now there are 12. What's up with that? (I am playing on an 1pad).
