Level Cap and skill points?

Great game, really enjoying it so far! However, I'm wondering if there is any limit to how much I can level a character. Looking through the achievements I see that it must be at least at level 30, but does it go higher than that? I wanna know this so I can figure out the total number of skill points a character can have. Is the total higher if I invest gems in extra skill points?

    Level cap is 31. Without investing in gems on level ups, you get to put just one skill point in one of the three active ability branches.

    Thanks, I was expecting something like that, so I invested gems on every level up possible. If you make the mistake of not investing gems, your heroes will be permanently weaker, without any way to recover :(
