Prime and 5 star trades

Anyone have advice on how to be more successful at negotiating these trades? Do your chances improve if you spend gold to end the negotiations early vs. just waiting it out? I've been successful 2/3 times, but I don't understand the how/why/strategy of this feature. Also don't want to spend the gold on getting trade pieces if there is no guarantee of a successful trade. Thanks!

    I picked up josh Hamilton a few weeks ago in trade. I think it took 3 cycles, but I just pushed the trade button and let the timer run out. On 3rd try I got him. That strategy has worked for every trade I have submitted

    It appears to me, at least, that it's blind luck. I've had trades go through on the first try (usually the non-prime players), and this past weekend Prime Pujols cost me over 3k in gold to finally go through.
