  I've noticed that if I don't have a player locked and I'm maxed out at the number of players in the inactive section, which I think is 30 (could be wrong there), then when I get new players, the lower star players are kicked off my team to make room if the newer player has a higher star rating

  I've noticed this as well. To take it a step further, it pools all your inactives together to total up to the maximum of 30 players, regardless if they are pitchers or batters. So you could have 30 of all pitchers of you wanted. I haven't noticed which player gets the boot, the lowest rated would make the most sense but who knows if that's actually how they determine it. I hope you are right though cause that would be a nightmare trying to figure out who will be the next guy voted off the island, if it doesn't go off stars.
