How random is random

I'm getting a little frusterated with the game TBH. I just can't improve my team, I have probably gone 50 #1 picks and 50ish 1st rd picks without adding a 5 star player. The daily collection bonus its been months since I got gold, yet pretty much every day there is gold or a #1 pick as one of the options I didn't get. Today is hr derby day, I spent 300k on bronze slugger picks, I got 1 3 star another nothing better than that. About 2 months ago I bought gold with real money, I had a week where I got 3 5star players and gold twice in my daily bonus. Since I stopped spending real money I have been stuck. My newest added player was over 1500 games ago. This game gets boring when you can't improve your team without spending real money.
