players with good stats have low average

I have Michael Bourn and his stats are 90 55 104 with an overall of 80. I still can't get his batting average over .200 though and guys on the roster with a hit value of 80 and overall of 70 outhit him every single time. Is it worth spending xp on players like this?

Usually a high hit rating like that will perform well, but there are always outliers, and I think Bourne is one of them. You may get more from him if you turn up your base stealing. But some players never live up to their ratings. Then there are some who seriously outperform their ratings.
