I think it was casajr that came up with the answer in another thread. When you go into a contract hunt, you will be given a choice of weapons to use. The two new exotics show up as a choice.

I tend to keep shooting at the same dino until it drops. I should trust that they will die anyway without that last salvo and move on to the next dino. That and find the furthest one to shoot at first. Thanks for the tip.

The clue is in your post, they are too close. Let them wander off and get a little further away, then blast the closest one first. It may take a couple tries, but you will complete the hunt sooner this way. Good hunting!!
