How does the Sorcerer's Tournament Work?

When I defeat someone does their rank (and everyone's below) simply move down one?

    You switch places with them.  So if you are 50th and you beat 45th, you go to 45th, they go to 50th, and 46th through 49th don't move.

    Are there different brackets in tournament? I just started about a month ago. I’m currently ranked 33 but when I check the leaderboard for my club mate who is ranked 20th he’s not on there. Thanks in advance
