Guys do in fact have a dude as their rival & I believe he looks like the friendly actor at the very beginning of the game but the hair style varies and their friendly actor is the female rival.

Well, I wouldn't say "some". It's completely random, and I've restarted my alt account enough times to see that hairstyles actually change quite a lot! It's mostly coincidence that a lot of us on the forums have the same rival, but it doesn't account for the entire Stardom population :]
