Well typically the reason why is because after 8 innings or so, your SP’s rating is still higher than your closers even after they get tired. So during auto play the game will keep the better rating player in unless he is struggling. But upgrading your closer to max will usually help with this problem. Also if it is not a save situation, you can expect either a different pitcher than your closer or the same SP to stay in and finish the game
As @CanadaCubs pointed out just draft a bunch of low level pitchers with the late round draft picks and put them in rotation. Alternatively you could also take over in manual play in the 7th and bring in your closer.
