Confused newish player

I have tried everything I can think of but I still can't figure it out. How do you add friends? I have it linked to my fb and g+ so is it just none of my friends play or am I missing something that should bite me in the face? :confused:

    It's probably because none of your friends play the game. There are threads where people are sharing their G+ profiles, look around here or the General Discussion subforum.
    I tried to change my avatar, now I can't even see my face. Kids, don't change your avatar :p

    I add friends through Game Center using names I find here. Mine is Wanderer 1970 if you want to try to add a known player.
