I am in a silver league event of 23, in taking a look at the other players including the current leader,
who, had the following stats
VP 871, weapons sniper 160K Assault 117K, Tesla 176K Heavy 286K
Maxed base, and 9.5 drone power, all weapons seem to be maxed.
So one has to ask why is a player wanting to win a weapon, that is lesser than already owned, and upgraded?
If this is a person are the playing just to upgrade their drone, but if not are we now also playing against
drones for weapons that they don't need, or is it just the one percenters.

They don't. They want the milestone diamonds, PvP diamonds and the 50 gold. Shame there's no way to get the milestones and pass up on the prizes. An Opt-out button as Bradr752 put it.
