I can't spend my gold.

I can't upgrade anything because when I go to purchase something it says I don't have enough gold when I do and asks me to purchase more gold. This has only been happening about the last month but the game is becoming unplayable since I can't upgrade anything so I can progress. It's getting frustrating. I contacted customer care, waiting to hear back from them. Anyone else had/having this problem?
