Can android user play with iOS user?

it's a simple question : can android player Co-op with iOS player in multiplayer mode?
i think they can, because they use the same server right? or the iOS use Game Center servers

Would be good if it could be integrated though. I know it will never be possible though due to apples tight restrictions on their mobile devices
