How do you scout around Spider's Lair, Hell Fire and Forgotten Tomb safely?

It's really quite easy. Play solo. For the places above, kill off all the monsters In the first wave EXCEPT one or two puny ones and you can walk all over the place without being bothered or killed by big bosses. If you cannot do this you are not strong enough for this onslaught; start with some other easier ones like Dead Spire.

Spider's Lair.
Walk in clockwise direction downstairs along the wall till you see the pots, smash the pots along the wall till you came to a corner. Wait here for little spiders to come for you. This is the first wave and there are no biggies to take you out. Kill all except 1 or two which will be too puny to kill you. Just keep close to the wall and you will come across jars which you can smash if you like but just dont kill the puny spiders.

Go down the staircase still keeping close to the wall and you'll come to a Health Shrine. Take note of it and continue walking keeping close to the wall. You'll be heading south till you come a short flight of steps to a small landind across which, you'll see another Health Shrine. Keep walking tyou see barrels. Just smash them out of the war and you'll see a flight of stairs UP. You come to a landind with yet another flight of stairs up again on your right. This is the landing where you will do all of your fighting from wave 4 onwards.

Learning to recognise where you are in an onslaught like SL will keep you from being wiped out.

Hell Fire is more difficult to scout out but Forgotten Tomb is a piece of cake. Use the same method to explore them as for Spiders Lair.

Have Fun!
