Chef arena upgrades

Why are the chef arena upgrades so expensive? Also, do the opponents automatically use power ups when you do? It seems like no matter which one I use, the opponent uses the same or better. If so, then what's the point in using one?

waste of gold (and money if you buy gold).. and unless it's a daily requirement, I don't go in there.. no point. With the canape boost, I can do pretty well, I have upgraded a couple of the cheaper things, but when I hit Fame level 10 and saw that beating Gordon only gave you 1 gold ticket, I quit on it, getting 2 carrots in a mystery box and a gold ticket that I don't need by killing myself beating the last three bosses? haha no thanks
