New update question

Quick question. In the Halloween update they now have two symbols next to your killing meter on the right. One is a head or something and there's either one or two up or down arrows. The other symbol is a knife with the same kind of arrows. Sometimes they are different depending on the zombie. I'm not sure what the game is trying to tell us or how it's helping us so does anybody know?
