The game won't allow me to work with a friend because it says we are dating. I was clicking on a lot of things during the lower levels because didn't know what I was doing. But I need her to work with me or network. I don't even date women.

Easily done Just go to a restaurant or bar, select your friend and then choose break up. After you have done this, on your next project choose your friend to co-star with you on it and taa-dahh they should be a network contact but I don't think you will be able to gain co-star rewards with them.
