What do the different colour gift boxes mean?

In the closet, there are some items locked with white boxes, black boxes, and gold boxes. Do the different colours mean different things? I just checked my hair options and I have a gold boxed one unlocked but I haven't won that in the daily gift box thing?

I believe the colours are a rarity code of some sort or available depending if you clicked "Open Another" but I'm still investigating this.

As for the hairstyle it's one of two things, either you bought it but don't remember Or you experienced a glitch and received a random item... It happened to me when I updated! Got of pair of gold shoes out of nowhere xD
