Adding friends - Game Center

Hello. I added someone on Game Center and added them to my contacts, but they don't show on my friends list. Only my Facebook friends show up there. Is Game Center friends no longer a thing? Or what can I do to fix this? Thank you.

I'm pretty sure that it's only possible to add friends through Facebook nowadays, right?
The reason I'm here is that I wanted to ask the same question. I'm back after a 4-year hiatus!
