Is there a way to add friends without Facebook?

I haven't played this game in 5 years and it's evident that a lot has changed, hence the question.

I believe that virtual friendships are great. Facebook is being a pain and I can barely use it at this time. Unfortunately, it's also the only way to add friends to the game, as far as I'm aware... Or is it?

If u have android, I think u add them through Google play but if u have IOS u can add them through Game Center. But glu needs to fix the problem with being able to see our friends in the game since they had fixed the problem with not being able to connect FB to the game.
