My turn timer ending during opponent's turn?

More than a couple times now, I have had my character's turn start and then they immediately did a basic attack on a random enemy. I chalked it up to a status effect I was unfamiliar with. However, I've had it happen multiple times now in PVP, even to character's unaffected by any status effects. I've also had my turn start, and before being able to choose and ability, do a basic attack. The only thing I can assume is that moves with long animations, when stacked one after another, eats into my turn timer, causing me to not actually get a turn.
