Dating GC friends vs. dating in game characters?

Is there a benefit of having a relationship with a GC friend as opposed to just a character that is part of the game? Is the relationship then worked upon on both sides or is it virtually the same?

    I have tried to date gc friends in the past, but they are not better than the ones in the game. Here's why, star news announces the dates with the characters in game, but not with gc friends thus gaining fans from the ones in game.

    I am dating a GC friend. I don't really need the fans, but that is a true point from Tony.
    A benefit is that they don't break up with you if you don't play the game or date them for a while.
