Thankfully, I've been getting the error hardly at all recently (on iPhone). Worst case these days is it doesn't load any goals for awhile or it doesn't count something towards an already activated goal. Quitting and restarting app always solves it. Maybe it's an android issue?

@Klask -- To forfeit, do nothing. After 24hrs the duel will immediately forfeit, you'll lose 3 points and challenger will gain 3 points (plus a duel token). No, it doesn't. Patience only increases patience. Only the two tip-increasing decor items increase tips. And they are apparently the only decor upgrades which carry over into duels. All other decor upgrades only count within the venue episodes.
